Privacy Policy

Effective 13 August 2026

Dawn is a personal assistant you use inside Apple Messages. This policy describes what Dawn actually collects, where it actually goes, and how to get it deleted. It is written in plain English on purpose.

The short version. Dawn stores your Apple conversation identifier, your messages, and the things you ask it to remember. The content of your messages is sent to Anthropic, which is the AI service that writes Dawn's replies. Nothing is sold, nothing is used for advertising. Text STOP to end messages, or email dylan@heydawn.ca to have everything deleted.

Who we are

Dawn is an independent service operated from Ontario, Canada. Because it is operated from Ontario, Canadian privacy law (PIPEDA) and Canadian anti-spam law (CASL) apply. You can reach a real person at dylan@heydawn.ca.

What Dawn collects

Things you give it

  • An Apple conversation identifier. Required — it is how Dawn reaches you, and it is the account. It is an opaque code Apple issues for your conversation with this business. It is not your phone number, and Dawn never receives your phone number, your Apple ID or your email address.
  • Your first name, if you give one, and a timezone so reminders land at the right local time.
  • The content of every message you send Dawn, stored as sent.
  • A record of your consent — the exact wording you agreed to, how you agreed, and when. Consent is given by text, so there is no IP address or browser attached to it. CASL requires this to be provable, so it is kept deliberately.

Things Dawn generates

  • Memories — appointments, tasks, durable facts and the people you mention, extracted from your messages so Dawn is useful over time.
  • Reminders and scheduled messages, including a record of what was sent and when.
  • Delivery records — whether a message went out, and the message ID given by the messaging provider.

What Dawn does not collect

  • Dawn cannot read your other messages. It only sees what is sent into the Dawn conversation.
  • No contacts, camera, microphone, photos, or location.
  • No tracking across other websites or apps. There are no analytics or advertising trackers on this site.
  • No payment details. Dawn does not currently take payments at all.

Where it goes

Dawn runs on a small number of services. Each one gets only what it needs, and each is listed here by name because you are entitled to know who handles your messages.

WhoWhat they getWhere
AnthropicThe content of your recent messages and your stored memories, sent with every reply so the model can answer in contextUnited States
SupabaseThe database — everything above, at restCanada (ca-central-1)
RailwayRuns the application itself; messages pass through in memoryUnited States
CM.comDelivers and receives your messages on Apple Messages for Business, as Apple's approved messaging providerNetherlands / EU

The database is hosted in Canada. The other services process data in the United States, which means your information crosses the border and may be accessible to US authorities under US law. Dawn does not sell personal information, does not share it with advertisers, and does not use your conversations to train anyone's AI models.

Dawn is an AI

Dawn is software, not a person. Its replies are generated by an AI model. If you ask whether you are talking to a human, it will tell you plainly that you are not.

You can ask to be put through to a person at any time by texting agent. Dawn stops replying and a human takes over the conversation. Text dawn to end that and go back to the assistant; it also ends on its own if nobody has picked the conversation up.

Messaging and consent

You text Dawn first. That first message is an inquiry, which is why Dawn is allowed to answer it — and the answer is a question asking whether it may text you from then on. Nothing else is sent until you say yes, and saying no ends it there.

Consent is asked for on its own, not bundled into an agreement to the terms — a single tick covering both is not valid consent under CASL, so Dawn does not do that. The question also tells you, in the same breath, that Dawn is an AI. What is stored is the exact question you were replying to, word for word, along with the time and the fact that it was given in the conversation. Consent is never collected on this website — there is no form and no checkbox anywhere on it.

Message frequency depends on what you ask Dawn to track. Reply STOP at any time to end all messages; reply HELP for help. Nothing about you is shared with third parties or affiliates for marketing. Deleting the conversation in Messages also ends it — Apple tells us, and Dawn stops permanently and does not reply again, including to say goodbye.

How long it is kept

Your information is kept while your account is active. If you ask for deletion, personal data is removed within 30 days, apart from consent records, which are retained as proof that consent was properly obtained — CASL requires a sender to be able to demonstrate this.

Texting STOP stops messages immediately but does not delete data. To delete, email dylan@heydawn.ca.

Your choices

  • Stop messages — text STOP. Immediate, and it works even if everything else is broken.
  • Talk to a person — text agent.
  • See what Dawn has, correct it, or delete it — email dylan@heydawn.ca from the number's owner, and it will be handled within 30 days.

Under PIPEDA you have the right to access your personal information, ask for corrections, and complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada. If you are in the EU, UK, or California, you have comparable rights and they will be honoured.

Security

How Dawn is secured is described on its own page: Security. In short — everything travels over HTTPS, inbound webhooks are accepted only from our messaging provider's published network on an endpoint whose address is itself a secret, and secrets live in environment variables rather than in the code.

Children

Dawn is not for anyone under 13 and does not knowingly collect their information. If you believe a child has signed up, email dylan@heydawn.ca and it will be deleted.

Changes

If this policy changes in a way that materially affects you, you will be told by text before it takes effect, and the effective date above will change.

A note on this document. This policy describes the system as it actually works today, verified against the source code rather than adapted from a template. It has not been reviewed by a lawyer. Before taking payments or operating at scale, have counsel review it.
